The DJ Tony C Story
One of my passions has always been
music. And while I was never gifted to play an instrument or
have a singer's voice, I enjoyed listening to music and playing my
CDs.
During my high school years, I listened to a wide variety of musical
genres, and while listening to KUBE 93 FM I became
interested in DJing. Too broke for turntables,
I
went to a local Target and picked up a deeply discounted Mixman
Digital DM2 Turntables(->).
While limited in what it could do, I was able to make my own beats
and remixes. Trust me, I thought I was all
that.During the fall term
of my freshman year at the
University
of Puget Sound(<-), I discovered
how I could unlock more power with the DM2 Turntables with a few programs on my computer. Now I could play, beat match,
and scratch MP3s! During this time, I also had signed on with
our college radio station KUPS 90.1 FM, and hosted an old-school
hip-hop show. I created the persona DJ Tony C. Even
at 2 am on Saturday mornings, I had a small listening base of
college listeners and workers down by the port of Tacoma.
While messing around with the radio station's turntables between
songs (it was that or dance, take calls, or surf the web on a slow
connection) I started considering purchasing real turntables.
Little did I know where this late night hobby was going to take me.
In
the spring of my freshman year, I rushed the Phi Delta Theta
Fraternity(->). While brainstorming ideas for
a social dance, I volunteered to DJ live, and they said "You
can?"
I said, "Yeah, it's a little hobby." So that dance was the
first night that I played in front of a live audience.
Ok, so they were throwing paint at each other and I was behind a
curtain spinning tunes on my Mixman DM2. However,
everyone enjoyed it, and from then on I have DJ'd every
single one of our parties.
The next fall, my
music library was full hits. I also had saved up some money
and my first pair of speakers so I could play house parties.
I
worked hard, saving up money from my gigs, part-time gigs with
Billy Waldo, and with a job at Aeropostale(->)
to buy the Numark Battle Pak,
featuring
two direct drive Numark TT1625 turntables, a mixer, and headphones,
and Serato Scratch Live(<-) to
use my turntables to manipulate the MP3s on my computer. Now I
was legit and could continue to improve my DJ skills and technique. And for once, my
scratches actually sounded like real scratching and not a digital
screech similar to pulling your fingernails across the blackboard!
And from there, the
rest is history. On any given weekend night at college, any
party I went to, people always asked, "Hey, DJ Tony C, aren't you
mixing somewhere tonight?" More people at college know me by
my DJ persona instead of my actual name but that's all right!
During the summer of
2006, I had earned enough money that I decided it was time to invest
in my own mobile entertainment
business.
With the purchase of a speaker system, lighting, upgraded
turntables (Stanton STR8-150s)(->),
CD Mixers, a new DJ-only laptop, business
cards,
and paperwork galore, I decided to market myself to do weddings(<-),
school dances, fundraisers, anything. While I was an unknown in a market full of mobile DJs, the clients that did hire
me were nothing but impressed and amazed at my rookie effort.
This gave me confidence to continue to branch out my DJ services and
become a DJ with music for all occasions! If you have an event
and are considering a live DJ, contact me and we will discuss ways
and ideas that I can enhance your event!
As DJ Tony C
Entertainment marches forward with time, I vow to continue
to improve as a DJ and MC. I continually network with DJs
to share ideas and even come up with
new ones - just to become the best DJ I can be.
My
goals are to have your complete satisfaction, to do each party
better than the last(->), and to
tailor my services to your individual
style and events needs. And most importantly, TO ALWAYS PLAY
YOUR REQUESTS! The day I no longer feel I can bring the most
action-packed entertainment to your party is the day I will retire from the business. Or unless my future
wife tells me to spend some weekend time with her first! |
